University of The Bahamas Launches Degree Works to Aid On-Time Completion of Programmes
9th August 2022
University of The Bahamas (UB) is pleased to announce that effective Wednesday 10th August 2022, newly admitted students will have access to a comprehensive, web-based tool to help keep them on track to graduate within the prescribed timeframe and increase student retention.
The DegreeWorks software provides for a structured approach to academic advisement, registration, and on-time completion of a programme of study which are key to helping students understand degree requirements. It allows the faculty advisor and the student to audit and efficiently plan for academic coursework.
“We, in Academic Affairs truly believe that this software will be revolutionary to the overall student experience and will be a driving force in improving student success towards an on-time graduation,” said Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Maria Woodside-Oriakhi.
With DegreeWorks, information is outlined on requirements for completing programmes of study. The audit reflects major and minor courses for a degree as well as general education and elective (free or prescribed) courses. It works like a checklist offering clear and direct paths that decrease the likelihood of students taking unnecessary courses outside of the programme of study and being delayed in graduating.
Specifically, when using DegreeWorks, the faculty advisor and the student are able to:
• See the full programme of study requirements;
• Map an action plan towards graduation for a programme of study;
• Use registration checklists to know remaining courses within a programme of study;
• View grades, cumulative grade point averages, and academic standing;
• Use a graduation or term calculator to determine the average grade required to reach a desired GPA;
• View transfer credits and course substitutions;
• Plan for registration for future semesters noting pre-requisites and co-requisite requirements;
• Create what-if-audits; and
• Be aware of courses whose credits cannot fulfill the chosen programme of study.
A student guide will also be available to help students navigate this new portal as the University better serves its student body.
