Fall 2022 Educational Delivery
5th August 2022
Since March 2020, University of The Bahamas has diversified its educational delivery model, prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency health protocols and the need to implement risk reduction measures. From the initial emergency remote instruction, we have transitioned into facilitating virtual, online and hybrid modes of instruction.
For Fall 2022, UB will continue to deliver education through a number of channels. This reflects the feedback received from students and faculty and the institution’s capacity. We are aware that some have expressed their desire to have completely virtual and online classes and/or a hybrid approach to learning. Others have been advocating for completely in-person instruction.
The Academic Senate has made a decision that is in the best interests of meeting our educational goals, nurturing student-centered learning and fostering student success. Consequently, effective Fall 2022 classes will be delivered as follows:
- Approximately 60% of classes will be face-to-face;
- Approximately 25% of classes will be hybrid; and
- Approximately 15% of classes will be virtual.
Interactive classrooms are being prepared to allow for more students to learn via the virtual mode of instruction. A further announcement is forthcoming regarding the specific classes that will be hybrid. Classes for Fall 2022 begin on Monday 22nd August 2022.
The agile shift to remote instruction forced a steep learning curve and transition for faculty, students and staff alike. Though they embraced the flexibility and convenience of technology-based learning, many of our students were left at a huge disadvantage. Some had no reliable access to computer devices and instruments nor robust Internet to provide uninterrupted connection. Though its own efforts and with the help of generous benefactors, the University has issued some computers, laptops and other devices. For classes with mandatory practicum components, classes have been held in person since Fall 2020 with strict health protocols in place.
Our University community has adapted and remained resilient through this era of disruption and we will continue to support each other and work together to achieve our mission and meet our goals.
