Public Feedback Invited on Gov’t Services Digitization Survey
Nassau, THE BAHAMAS – The crippling effects of crises like infectious disease pandemics and severe weather systems have deepened the need for the public sector to adapt and offer more convenient, uninterrupted services. The move towards digitization of customer service processes and procedures is a pivotal part of that transformation.
Residents of The Bahamas will soon have a chance to give their feedback on the quality of government services offered online and make recommendations on which ones should be enhanced.
The Government and Public Policy Institute (GPPI) at University of The Bahamas (UB) will be gathering information on the public’s preferences and priorities via a comprehensive survey and customer interviews. This will be a key step towards increasing efficiency and business continuity.
The survey is accessible online at www.ub.edu.bs/academics/institutes/gppi/until 31stAugust. In-person interviews will also be conducted, where possible, with printed surveys available at any of participating government agencies.
“Advancing our ability to operate digitally is no longer a luxury for The Bahamas but necessary to promote national development. It will ensure the kind of access to government services needed in a modern world,” noted Executive Director of GPPI, Mr. Zhivargo Laing.
GPPI’s oversight and execution of the survey is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding that it formalized with the Department of Transformation and Digitization in the Office of the Prime Minister. The department is responsible for improving, enhancing and modernizing the services of governmental agencies.
Among the agencies targeted for the survey are the Registrar General’s Department; Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Passport Office, Consular Division and Overseas Missions; Department of Lands and Surveys; Department of Inland Revenue (Real Property Tax, Business License and VAT); Bahamas Customs Department; and Department of Immigration. Others include the Public Treasury Department; Ministry of Public Works (Building Control Division for building permits, Department of Physical Planning for subdivision fees, central services for sale of burial plots, Department of Public Works for ‘open’ tender documents and excavation fees); Bahamix – payments for purchases of prime, tack coat, mill, fill and asphalt; Port Department; Department of Road Traffic; Department of Local Government and Royal Bahamas Police Force for Police certificates.
Mr. Laing explained, “Without the cooperation of the Bahamian public, this important effort will not be successful and improved access to government services digitally will be delayed. We need the public’s support.”
The projected sample size will be 500 persons for each agency. Once all of the information has been collected, GPPI will then collate and report the findings for further action.
