University of The Bahamas Leaders Pay Courtesy Call on Education Minister

Nassau, THE BAHAMAS – Leaders of University of The Bahamas recently paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Education and Technical & Vocational Training Glenys Hanna-Martin at the ministry’s headquarters on University Drive.

During the visit, the first by Acting President of University of The Bahamas Janyne Hodder, discussions were held with Minister Hanna-Martin and senior administrators on key priorities in higher education. Board Chair Mrs. Allyson Maynard-Gibson KC, Vice-Chair Gadville McDonald and Chief of Staff Felicity Humblestone accompanied President Hodder on the courtesy call.

Minister Hanna-Martin thanked UB for its partnership and its longstanding contribution to training the nation’s teachers.  Other initiatives were discussed where UB has provided strategic support to the ministry, including a study by the Government and Public Policy Institute on the factors impacting learning outcomes at the high school level, reintroduction of the Institute for Educational Leadership, which provides training for school principals, and support for other projects such as expertise in developing the RFP for a Study on Mathematics performance.

Mrs. Maynard-Gibson and President Hodder thanked the minister and her colleagues for their unwavering support of UB in endorsement, funding, and for her leadership. Other discussion points included UB’s process for seeking national and international accreditation, the pipeline of talent for the public service, challenges facing the overall education system, and coordination among peer organizations within the national higher education system.

Since assuming office on 1st July, President Hodder also paid a courtesy call on the former Governor General His Excellency Sir Cornelius A. Smith and Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis who have both affirmed the power that higher education has to transform individuals and communities.
