Appointment of Dean (Interim), Pure and Applied Sciences

Dean of Pure and Applied Sciences Dr. Veronica Toppin.

University of The Bahamas (UB) announces the appointment of Assistant Professor Dr. Veronica Toppin as Dean (Interim), Pure and Applied Sciences effective 3rd January 2023. 

In this capacity, Dr. Toppin will play an integral role in facilitating the delivery of academic programmes and managing the fiscal and human resources of the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (PAS). She will also be responsible for the recruitment of high quality faculty, staff, and students to the programme; and supporting faculty research activities. PAS has oversight for the schools of Chemistry, Environmental and Life Sciences; Nursing and Allied Health Professions; and Mathematics, Physics and Technology. 

Dr. Toppin has served in a number of roles in the health care system and academia. She worked at The Bahamas’ Ministry of Health, Community Health Services, served as a faculty member at the College/University of The Bahamas and held the positions of adjunct faculty in Biology at the University of The District of Columbia and Research Fellow at The University of Alaska Fairbanks. She is an Assistant Professor of Biology and former chair of the School of Chemistry, Environmental and Life Sciences at UB. 

Dr. Toppin’s research interests include the epidemiology of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases and the impact and implications on sustainable healthcare systems in The Bahamas. She has also conducted research in the role of cisplatin in cancer prevention and the role of the histaminergic system in the regulation of respiration. She remains an active member of the Society for Neuroscience and the American Physiological Society.   

Dr. Toppin earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of The District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., and her graduate degree in Public Health (MPH) from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She also attained a doctoral degree (PhD) in Physiology from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
