Disney Cruise Line and University of The Bahamas Expand Programme for Free Workforce Training in Abaco and Eleuthera
16th January 2026
Nassau, THE BAHAMAS — A groundbreaking collaboration between Disney Cruise Line (DCL) and University of The Bahamas (UB) will expand this year to further strengthen the tourism and hospitality workforce in the Family Islands through the Leading Light Programme.
The programme first launched in 2024, offering hospitality, leadership and job readiness training to Eleutherans at no cost. In April, the Programme will extend professional training opportunities to residents of Abaco while once again serving Eleuthera. DCL and UB officials made the announcement during a press conference held on Friday 16th January, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing Bahamian talent and elevating service excellence in the Family Islands.
“Through our continued collaboration with Disney Cruise Line, University of The Bahamas is fulfilling its mission of driving national development by preparing Bahamians, particularly in our Family Islands, to lead, serve, and excel in the industry that anchors our economy,” said President of UB Dr. Robert Blaine, III. “When we invest in people at the community level, we strengthen the entire country. Every graduate of this Programme represents an opportunity to improve the country’s economic future.”
The Leading Light Programme is designed to equip hospitality and tourism professionals with practical skills, leadership competencies, and service-focused training to support the thriving sectors in communities outside New Providence. With tourism numbers climbing, there is a heightened demand for skilled, customer-focused professionals.
As the Leading Light Programme expands to Abaco and continues in Eleuthera, the collaboration between DCL and UB signals a long-term investment in developing Bahamian professionals in the top industry in The Bahamas.
“We are proud to continue our collaboration with the University of The Bahamas to help make a positive difference for residents and tourism in Eleuthera and now Abaco,” said Joey Gaskins, regional director, public affairs, Disney Cruise Line. “Disney Cruise Line has introduced countless guests to the culture and spirit of The Bahamas and remains committed to supporting accessible workforce development opportunities across the Family Islands.”
Since its inception, the Programme has already made measurable impacts. More than 120 Eleutherans – from settlements across the island – graduated from phase one of the Programme, facilitated by UB’s Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (CeLEARN) unit. The Programme initially focused on customer service, leadership and communication through courses such as Introduction to Hospitality, Hospitality and Tourism Leadership, and Employment Communication modules. Graduates earned new jobs, promotions, and continued academic advancement.
“Phase two of the Leading Light Programme reflects University of The Bahamas’ continued commitment to strengthening human capital in our Family Islands. By expanding this initiative to Abaco while continuing our work in Eleuthera, we are ensuring that Bahamians are equipped with the skills, confidence, and professionalism needed to thrive in a service-driven economy and to represent our country with excellence,” Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Dr. Maria Woodside-Oriakhi said.
As millions of visitors travel to The Bahamas, with more of them seeking the quaint cultures of the Family Islands, they are looking for not only top-quality amenities but also meaningful, memorable interactions. Abaco and Eleuthera, each renowned for distinctive charm, attract tourists from around the world. A picturesque island and boating haven, Abaco is home to a burgeoning second-home destination, while Eleuthera’s rich history and natural beauty make it a sought-after escape. As these island economies grow, so does the need for world-class service while authentically representing Bahamian culture.
Connections with service professionals are key – from the warmth of a greeting at the neighborhood grocery store, hotel or restaurant, to the efficiency of frontline public service officers. These everyday interactions shape the visitor experience and directly influence The Bahamas’ global reputation as a premier destination.
Building on that foundation, phase two of the Leading Light Programme places renewed emphasis on developing the people behind the experience by ensuring that each participant is equipped to deliver excellence, with confidence, cultural pride and professionalism.
This new phase will offer three courses: Tech for the 21st Century Employee is focused on using digital tools to enhance efficiency, communication, and service delivery in today’s dynamic workplace; Commitment to Customer Service Excellence is centered on professionalism, effective communication, and ethical conduct; and Soft Skills for the Exceptional Employee is focused on developing interpersonal skills, and best practices in communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution.
These courses will adopt a hybrid learning model, combining online instruction with traditional in-person classes at established learning centers on both Eleuthera and Abaco. These centers will be outfitted with theatre-style technology that will support interactive and collaborative learning. The first cohorts will begin in April, with participants earning 7.2 continuing education units (CEUs) upon successful completion.
