Hodder Hall at Bishop’s University Cements Dr. Janyne Hodder’s Legacy in Higher Education

Nassau, THE BAHAMAS —Janyne Hodder’s impact on Bishop’s University was cemented by the naming of a new student residence in her honour on Saturday, 15 April 2023, thus confirming her legacy as a trailblazer in higher education. Janyne Hodder Hall pays homage to Dr. Hodder who was the first woman to head a university in Quebec when she was appointed the sixteenth Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Bishop’s University in 1995. Bishop’s University awarded her a Doctor of Civil Law degree, honoris causa, in 2007.
More than a decade later, she was appointed President of The College of The Bahamas (COB) from 2006 – 2010 and her impact in The Bahamas has been just as profound as her impact in Canada. Today, Dr. Hodder serves as a Trustee on University of The Bahamas (UB) Board of Trustees.
During her leadership in higher education, she “earned the admiration and affection of her colleagues by her talented, astute, unselfish, emotionally intelligent leadership,” as noted by former Bishop’s colleague, Pam McPhail.
In her address at the Janyne Hodder Hall Inauguration, Dr. Hodder reflected on a quote she gave when she left Bishop’s: “…I also believe that institutions, like people, do better when well loved. I have had no reason to revise this view.”
According to Dr. Hodder, a good university is one that fosters love of learning, love of people, and transforms the lives of its stakeholders: “It turns out that love has a lot to do with being a good university, a university that creates and shares knowledge, but also does more. A good university gives meaning to the lives of its members, creates ever-lasting bonds of friendship, models a healthy way to live with others with whom we may not always agree, teaches personal responsibility, and demonstrates ethical conduct.”
She added: “Such features of university life don’t add a lot of points to popular university rankings calculations, but they make a profound difference in the lives of those who work in universities and those who attend them.”
Dr. Hodder’s contributions to higher education have had a positive and enduring impacton the lives of countless individuals who were the beneficiaries of her warm friendship, sage mentorship, and her adroit leadership. Her legacy will never be forgotten because Janyne Hodder Hall will be an everlasting reminder of a woman whose career has been driven by purpose and love.
