Nassau, THE BAHAMAS — University of The Bahamas announces the appointment of Dr. Helean McPhee, an alumna, as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, effective Monday 1st August, 2022.
In this capacity, Dr. McPhee supports the administrative operations of Academic Affairs, providing collaborative administrative leadership, supervision, evaluation, and personnel management support for all Directors in the department. She organizes and facilitates planning meetings of Deans and other Academic Affairs leadership groups and evaluates information and materials to advance team deliberations at the request of the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Additionally, Dr. McPhee oversees academic and special initiatives assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Other key duties and responsibilities include assisting in the evaluation of existing academic programmes and the development of new programmes, collaboratively managing student and faculty concerns and assisting with the resolution of academic issues. She also works with the Vice President of Academic Affairs to maintain a constructive relationship between the Academic Senate and the Office of Academic Affairs.
Dr. McPhee is a graduate of The College of The Bahamas, now University of The Bahamas, and earned a PhD. In Linguistics from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica.
In spring 2003, she became an adjunct faculty in the School of English Studies until the fall of 2005 when she transitioned into a full-time faculty. In previous roles, she has served as Writing Programme Coordinator and subsequently Chair of the School of English Studies where she assisted with programme reviews and the creation of the Minor in Linguistics. During her tenure, she served on a number of committees and boards. Recently promoted to the position of Professor of Composition and Linguistics, Dr. McPhee founded English in the Park, a recruitment event for prospective undergraduate students and co-founded the School of English Studies-Ministry of Education Workshops for language arts teachers to bridge the gap between high school and university level English.
