Purpose Meets Excellence and Culminates in Fulbright Scholarship for UB Alumnus
Nassau, THE BAHAMAS – Solving real-world problems. That’s what drives Stanley Beauchamp’s quest for excellence and moving the country’s reliance on fossil fuels from a modern-day conundrum to a challenge that he helps to overcome.
Stanley, a recent engineering graduate of University of The Bahamas (UB), has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Foreign Student scholarship to earn a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University.
“I have a strong desire to solve real-world challenges and especially being in a position to potentially elevate my country in the energy sector is what truly motivates me,” says Stanley who earned 3 of his school’s top awards when he graduated with distinction in 2024 with a BSc in Electrical Engineering Technology.
Stanley is determined to help modernize The Bahamas’ energy structure and implement innovative solutions that reduce reliance on harmful fossil fuels, drive down costs, and reduce vulnerabilities to natural disasters. At Arizona State, he plans to specialize in Electrical Power and Energy Systems.
Now, having been approved for a fully-funded scholarship, he is determined to take the next deliberate step towards his future, thanking his former UB professor for believing in him and encouraging him to apply for the Fulbright scholarship.
“I first learned about the programme through a link shared by my engineering professor at the time Mr. Philip Armbrister,” says Stanley. “I then submitted all of my academic documents to the US Embassy, Nassau, and I was shortlisted and invited for an interview. After the interview, I was later informed that I was selected for this prestigious award.”
A certified electrician, Stanley is particularly interested in smart grid technologies, renewable energy integration, and energy storage solutions. He wants to leverage data analytics and advanced control strategies to enhance the efficiency and reliability of power distribution networks. He spent many days in the Technology Building at UB thinking about this path forward and strategizing, mentored by his faculty and an environment that prioritized student success-focused excellence. He also wants to pay it forward and inspire the next generation of problem solvers.
“I also aspire to teach because I was a Math teacher before I got this scholarship and I want to mentor future engineers and inspire them to be more innovative so our country can progress,” says the former C. C. Sweeting educator.
Stanley is well on the way to joining a global network of future leaders who are actively addressing the world’s crucial challenges, fostering innovation and building global collaboration.
