Corporate Bahamas Connects with University of The Bahamas Students
25th October 2022
Nassau, THE BAHAMAS — University of The Bahamas (UB) recently provided its students and business stakeholders with an avenue to interact, foster professional relationships, and discuss potential internship and career opportunities at the 2022 Career Fair.
The fair was held in the courtyard of UB’s College of Tourism, Hospitality, Culinary Arts, and Leisure Management (The CALM) at the Oakes Field Campus on Thursday, 20th October under the theme, “National Education, Global Vision”. The university’s Centre for Counselling and Career Services and the Career and Job Placement Advisory Board collaborated to host the event along with corporate partners.
Representatives of 38 local corporate entities, government offices and various companies braved the rainy weather to promote their respective careers and to recruit part-time and full-time students. Some UB students were also interviewed for potential opportunities.
Director of UB’s Centre for Counselling and Career Services, Dr. Christine Curtis, said UB is doing its best to give its students head starts to gainful employment in an increasingly competitive corporate arena, by helping them to gain knowledge and experience about the employment process.
“We want our students to be confident when they go into the interview room, giving that firm handshake and looking the interviewer straight in the eyes and not be intimidated,” said Dr. Curtis. “To ask questions, talk, and be comfortable in doing that, and be exposed to all of the vendors because you may be pursuing a degree, and then you’re exposed to something else that you may love to do.”
Among the companies who participated in and sponsored the career fair were Bahamas First; PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the Central Bank of The Bahamas; Royal Bank of Canada (RBC); Ernst & Young (EY); the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC); Cemex Bahamas; Furze Entertainment; Bahama Health; Baha Mar; Atlantis, and Disney Cruise Line.
Vice President of Academic Affairs at UB, Dr. Maria Oriakhi, said the event provided exactly what UB’s students need to not only be successful in the corporate arena, but also to make their eventual transition to that arena much smoother and seamless.
“These kinds of events are key initiatives that we at University of The Bahamas truly believe enrich student experiences and give the exposure you need in order to be successful in pursuing your career goals,” said Dr. Oriakhi said to the students present. “We should all be grateful for this opportunity. We have to come together and share what we have to offer each other.”
UB President Dr. Erik Rolland, in officially opening the Career Fair 2022, said the event is also a testament of the university’s commitment to facilitating national development by cultivating standard-bearers of excellence for the Bahamian workforce.
“The mission of University of The Bahamas is to support and drive national development through research, innovation, teaching, and service,” said Dr. Rolland. “One of the best indicators that we are succeeding at this is the ability of our students to find a career that’s right and that fits them, enables them to improve their lives, and continue to build and develop The Bahamas.”
