Current Research:
Violence is a genuine concern that is not being addressed in its proper form in regards to prevention, education, and social intervention. There is an increased risk of being a victim of gender based violence and its association with unemployment and poverty. Individuals who live in the inner cities of New Providence may face serious consequences of gender based violence since violence is more likely grounded in poverty, unemployment, and low educational attainment. Confirmation of this association is documented in the United Nations Caribbean crime report which indicates The Bahamas has the highest rate of recorded assault rates in the region (1,697 assaults per 100,000).
Beyond assault, violence can have different harmful effects on a persons’ life. These effects are not only physical but also serious emotional pain, lack of motivation and a sense of self-worth. More efforts are needed to fulfill advocacy and healing mandate as it relates to domestic violence among vulnerable population. This program is designed to fill the service (healing, empowerment and education) and advocacy mission for Zonta International. Certain elements of the proposal, specifically education, may provide these at risks individuals with tools to escape and move AHEAD. Collaborators:Zonta Club of New Providence. Sponsoring Agency:Pan American Development Foundation
