“Wood You” Showcases The Art of Sustainability

The Pro Gallery opened its programming for the Fall 2017 semester with a group exhibition in August celebrating the culmination of the Visual Arts Department’s 2017 Summer Workshop lead by carpenter and artisan Fritz Cox and facilitated by UB art faculty Keisha Oliver. Learning basic woodwork techniques including carpentry and woodturning, UB students worked alongside Cox and Oliver to create a collection of functional and artistic pieces. Inspired by their shared appreciation of materials and process, the artists challenged ideas of value and perception. By re-purposing discarded wood and material found on construction sites at UB’s Oakes Field Campus, they hold fast to the age-old saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Participating Artists were Fritz Cox, Cordeia Munnings, Keisha Oliver, Matthew Rahming and Jarrette Stubbs.
