Insights, Research on Prison Population and Impact

More than 60 percent of the population at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services are serving prison sentences of less than five years and will be released into mainstream society. Their plight, impact on society and future are among the research findings of the publication Our Prisoners, a collaboration involving the Inter-American Development Bank, Government of The Bahamas and University of The Bahamas. In commemoration of the IDB’s 60th anniversary, the official launch of “Our Prisoners: A Collection of Papers Arising from a 2016 Survey of Inmates” was held on 9th October to promote national conversations about corrections. Included in the information released was that for every 100,000 persons, approximately 379 are behind bars and the majority are within the 18 to 35 age group.
