New Providence Commencement Speaker - Sherise D. Ferguson, M.D.

Sherise D. Ferguson, M.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Surgery, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX.

Dr. Sherise Ferguson is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in primary and metastatic brain tumors at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. The first of three children, Sherise was born in Nassau to Dr. Sparkman Ferguson and Mrs. Dawn Ferguson.

She attended St. Andrew’s High School before leaving the island to pursue higher education in the United States. Dr. Ferguson earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from The University of Virginia, her master of liberal arts degree from The University of Pennsylvania, and her medical degree from The University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Ferguson also completed her neurosurgery residency and a research fellowship at University of Chicago, before traveling to Texas for a clinical fellowship in neurosurgical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center, the number one ranked hospital for cancer care in the United States. Dr. Ferguson joined the faculty at MD Anderson as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery in 2013. She specializes in surgery for complex brain tumors, “awake” brain surgery and brain metastasis.

Dr. Ferguson has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters. She is currently the neurosurgical collaborator for two ongoing clinical trials on melanoma metastatic disease.  She is a member of multiple organizations including the Society for Neuro-oncology, Congress of Neurosurgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgery and Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She loves biking, sci-fi movies, hanging out with her 4-year old son Jacob David and the Bahamian delicacy, cracked conch.

Grand Bahama Commencement Speaker - The Hon. K. Peter Turnquest

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. K. Peter Turnquest was born on 22ndAugust, 1964 in The Bahamas and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Prairie View A&M University, and his MBA from Nova Southeastern University. He is a Certified Public Accountant and has been in public and private practice for over 30 years in the area of financial accounting and reporting, audit, corporate services, mergers & acquisitions, receiverships and liquidations. Mr. Turnquest has extensive business experience, having led international sales and manufacturing operations in several countries.

He is a former president of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce; past Assistant Governor, Rotary International District 6990; past Substitute Grand Master, District Grand Lodge of The Bahamas, Scottish Constitution; past president, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Iota Epsilon Lambda Chapter, Nassau; and past Chairman of the Bahamas Scouts Association (Grand Bahama).

Mr. Turnquest was elected to Parliament for the first time on 7thMay, 2012, as the Member of Parliament for East Grand Bahama. Following successful re-election on 10thMay, 2017, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

He is married to Sonia Turnquest and the couple has two children, Kevin and Nathalie.

Nurses and Allied Health Professions Pinning Ceremony Speaker - Pastor Mario Moxey

In November 1992, while attending World Harvest Bible College in Columbus, Ohio, Pastor Mario Moxey acknowledged the call of God upon his life to pastor a Church.  He is the spiritual leader of Bahamas Harvest Church where he has been the Pastor for the past twenty-three years.

Under the leadership of Pastor Moxey and his wife Erika, Bahamas Harvest is one of the fastest growing churches in the region.  It is attracting many into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.  Pastor Moxey, a pastor for the nation, truly possesses a heart for the Harvest and has a sincere desire to see impactful life changes wherever he goes.

Pastor Moxey and his wife are the proud parents of three children, Alec, Rachelle and Madison.
